Dog Searches and Finds Friend in Hospital

A miniature schnauzer in Cedar Rapids proved that nothing, even distance, can break that bond.  Nancy Franck and her two miniature schnauzers, Sissy and Barney, live in southeast Cedar Rapids. Franck, however, has been staying 15 to 20 blocks away at Mercy Medical Center following a surgery.  She’s been in the hospital for about two weeks.  Last Saturday Nancy’s husband, Dale, was devastated when Sissy unexpectedly ran away from home  “We looked up and there was this dog that was just running across the lobby,” said Mercy Security Officer Samantha Conrad.

Valentin Gruener and Mikkel Legarth play with Sirga as if she were a family pet. But while she is not a pet, Sirga is considered part of the family, as much as a lion can be part of a human family.  It is a touching bond that stretches back to when the two men rescued Sirga as a cub deep in the African bush and became the animal’s surrogate parents.

Not only does the companionship give them much needed joy and solace during their deployment, but growing evidence now shows that canine companions can actually help a soldier to overcome post-traumatic stress.
