Orphaned Hippo Says Good Bye to Unlikely Friends

Two-week old Douglas was in bad shape when he arrived at the Chipembele Wildlife Education Centre in Mfuwe, Zambia. More than a year later, thanks to his two canine companions, he’s ready to go back to the wild.  Rescuers found the abandoned baby hippo near the Zambezi River in May 2013. He was then helicoptered to the center, where he was nursed back to health.

Animal advocates joining forces on Tuesday, April 30 to celebrate National Animal Advocacy Day—and the public is invited!  Advocates across the nation are going to spend the day on the phone, calling members of Congress and urging them to ban horse slaughter once and for all.

National Pet Day is Thursday, April 11, and what better time to care for your critter? Or perhaps this is the right time to adopt a new pet.  According to petdayusa.com, the day was started by celebrity pet lifestyle expert and animal welfare advocate Colleen Paige in order “to celebrate the joy pets bring to our lives and to create public awareness about the plight of many different kinds of animals awaiting a forever home in shelters all across the nation.”


Westminster Dog Show 2013: Banana Joe The Affenpinscher Wins Best In Show

Banana Joe is very appealing, in any language. The little affenpinscher with a monkey face added to his world of success Tuesday night, winning best in show at the Westminster Kennel Club. “He speaks German, Dutch, Spanish and English,” co-owner and breeder Mieke Cooijmans offered. She was set to take Banana Joe back to the Netherlands on Wednesday. Now, the trip has been postponed for his victory lap.


Puppy Bowl 2013 Lineup Revealed

While football fans anticipate the approaching Super Bowl bonanza, lovers of animals (and all things cute and cuddly) can now celebrate the advent of an exciting bowl of their own. We’re talking about the Puppy Bowl, of course — Animal Planet’s annual battle of unbridled cuteness that will air this year on Sunday, Feb. 3. The 2013 Puppy Bowl lineup was revealed this week, and avid fans of the cutefest have hardly been able to contain their glee.


California Shark Fin Ban Signed Into Law

Shark fin soup will disappear from the Golden State’s menu in January 2013 under legislation signed into law on Friday by California Governor Jerry Brown.  Strongly supported by environmentalists, the bill bans the sale, purchase or possession of the ocean-going predator’s fins. But restaurants can continue to serve any existing stock of shark fin until 2013.
